HOW TO EXPLAIN SALVATION TO A CHILD

HOW TO EXPLAIN SALVATION TO A CHILD

As a Christian parent, one of the ultimate goals is to lead our children to Christ. For every single thing we do, to teach them about God, right from their time of birth, one of our key goals should be their salvation.

I found a resource called ‘The Wordless Book’ some years ago, that really helps me to explain salvation to my children. In fact, if you ask my 5-year-old when she was born again, she would always say ‘It is one of the days that mum was explaining the book with different colours to me’ (that is what she calls the wordless book).

The Wordless Book is a  Christian evangelistic book, first invented by Charles Haddon Spurgeon in 1866, and since then has been used all over the world as a tool for children’s evangelism.

The wordless book, as the name implies is a book of colours, and without words. The book is such that colours are being used to communicate an important Bible truth about God’s plan for our salvation.

The colours of the pages of the wordless book are Black, Red, White, Gold and Green.

Here’s an explanation of each page:

The black page represents sin.

Wordless book

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23 NKJV

Everyone has sinned and is far away from God’s saving presence.

Romans 3:23 GNB

The purpose of this page is to explain to the child that he or she was born a sinner. You can also tell the child who a sinner is and what it means to sin. Also, tell the child that a sinner cannot have a relationship with God.

The red page represents the Blood of Jesus.

Indeed, according to the Law almost everything is purified by blood, and sins are forgiven only if blood is poured out.

Hebrews 9:22 GNB

Here, you will let the child know that God wants everyone to have a relationship with him, and so He sent his son Jesus to die, shed his blood and clean us from our sins.

The white page represents pure

Wordless book

If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 GNB

This means that by believing in Jesus, all their sins are forgiven and then they will have a relationship with God.

The gold page represents Heaven.

Wordless book

We, however, are citizens of heaven, and we eagerly wait for our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven.

Philippians 3:20 GNB

I love this a lot. It says that after believing in Jesus, we become citizens of heaven. A curious child may ask why gold. At this point, you describe what heaven looks like.

The last page is green which represents growth.

Wordless book

But continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, now and forever! Amen.

2 Peter 3:18 GNB

This is to let them know that after believing in Jesus, there’s a need for them to grow in Him and to bring others to know Him.

I included two additional colours in the wordless book.

The colours are purple and blue.

The purple page represents the Dominion

Wordless book

But you are the chosen race, the King’s priests, the holy nation, God’s own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvellous light.

1 Peter 2:9 GNB

The reason why I added this colour is that I want my children to know that our stay on earth is not just to grow in our walk with God and our relationship with Christ. It’s also to rule and have dominion over the earth. It is to shine as light and proclaim God’s praises wherever He places us.

The blue page represents the Appearance of Jesus in the sky.

as we wait for the blessed Day we hope for, when the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ will appear.

Wordless book

Titus 2:13 GNB

Yaay, I added this also because I feel it’s really important for my child to know that one day Jesus will appear in the sky to take all those who believe in him to heaven, where we really belong.

Discovering this wordless book and modifying it was really an amazing journey for me.
