Children are very interesting personalities. You can’t teach a child the way you teach an adult. The child will not get it. For a child to understand, it needs to be associated with play, fun, colors, etc.
In the past few years of teaching my children biblical truths, I have used some interesting ways that I have found extremely useful. Today I will be sharing them with you..
Youtube videos
There are a lot of Christian children youtube channels. Some days ago in a women’s group, that I belonged to, a discussion ensued and I realized that not many people know about the Christian children youtube channels that are available. Of course, I believe that there is a need to do more; more people need to enter into the children’s media space and create different educational content but at the moment, there are quite a number of channels that are doing justice to that.
I have compiled some of these in this article.
Roleplay
Another way I teach my kids is through the use of role-play.
When I want to teach my kids a bible story, firstly, we will read the story from the bible, next, they will watch a cartoon that depicts the story and then, we will act the story out. It makes me know if they understand the story or not. It also makes them understand the story better. We also use this method to pass across biblical truths to them.
Some weeks ago, during our family devotion my daughter said she was scared that there would be a time when she no longer serves God.
We shared two scriptures with her;
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
John 10:28 NKJV
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.
Jude 1:24 NKJV
We explained to her that nothing can snatch us away from God’s hand. God is holding on to us even much more than we are holding on to him, and he is able to keep us from falling.
To drive home the point, we acted a family role-play/drama.
Daddy held Emmanuel so tight and Grace and I tried to snatch Emmanuel from Dad’s hand, but we could not because Daddy was holding so tight to him. No matter how hard we tried, we could not because he was pushing us away, and at some point, he even wanted to bite us…lol……and that really drove home the point.
As much as we are holding on to Father God, he is holding on to us even more and he will do all he can to keep us from falling. He has invested a lot in us. He can’t just watch us go. In the night, when Emmanuel was praying, he thanked God because He was holding us so tight and nothing could snatch us away from his hand. That’s the power of role-play.
Storytelling
This is another very interesting way I teach my kids. I have taught them several biblical truths using this method. If for example, I want to teach them about obedience, I would think of a story that portrays obedience and I would share it with them. Sometimes, it could be a true life story, but most times it is always a fictional story. Some weeks ago, my daughter was going to start in a new school, and weeks before, I started to tell her the story of a little boy called Jack that wanted to start school and he prayed to God to help him enjoy his school and make new friends and God answered his prayer.
It was a very relatable story and my daughter also started to pray about her new school. Of course, God answered her prayers.
My storytelling has birthed the story of Jack, a compilation of stories for children to learn biblical truths. You can download the story here. You can purchase the hard copy from Amazon here.
Reading the Bible
This is another way we teach biblical truths to our children. During family devotions, we share scriptures with them, ask them to explain and we also explain to them. Also, when teaching them bible stories, I like to read the story to them from the bible so that they will hear the story, the exact way it happened. I also believe that the scriptures are very powerful and it’s good for them to interact with them. Aside from these, I want them to learn that reading the bible is very important and does not substitute for watching YouTube videos.
Coloring and Activity Sheets
This has also been helpful. After each and every lesson, I download coloring sheets for my 3-year-old and Activity Sheets for my 5-year-old.
Use of songs
This method is used to teach memory verses. I used this method to teach my kids 6 memory verses during the summer break and after 6 weeks, they can still remember the first verses we learned. I compose songs in a fun way, using the verse I want to teach them. I talked more about this on my YouTube channel and gave practical examples.
I trust that you were blessed by this post. Please feel free to share the ways in which you teach your kids, in the comment section.
